Living in Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
Neighbourhood Profile
Over the past ten years, the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighborhood has seen a multitude of restaurants and specialty stores open their doors to a young and dynamic clientele. New residences, public squares and parks have been built and developed, among others along a former railroad right-of-way, in the heart of the neighborhood, to meet all the needs of these new citizens. But if this renewal is changing the neighborhood’s decor, Hochelaga-Maisonneuve has not lost its working-class roots or its patrimonial touch. One only has to walk along the commercial arteries of Ontario and Sainte-Catherine of the Promenades Hochelaga-Maisonneuve commercial development corporation to see the dynamism of the neighborhood.
The neighborhood is mostly rented, and the most common type of housing is an apartment building of less than 5 stories. The majority of the population is French-speaking.
