Starting September 30th, 2027, all pool owners in Quebec will be required to comply with the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Regulation.
Which pools are concerned?
The regulation applies to all outdoor pools capable of holding 60 cm (approximately 2 feet) of water or more, whether in-ground, semi in-ground, above-ground, or portable (including inflatable pools). Even pools installed before November 1st, 2010 — which were previously exempt — are now required to comply.
Key requirements
-
Mandatory fencing: Pools must be surrounded by an enclosure to restrict access.
-
Self-closing and self-latching gates: All access points to the pool must be equipped with a self-closing and self-latching passive security device.
-
Clear perimeter: To prevent children from climbing and accessing the pool, all equipment related to its operation must be installed at a distance of more than 1 meter from the pool wall or, where applicable, from the enclosure.
